Teltonika TRB142 power supply and cables

Everything about powering the Teltonika TRB142, a 4G gateway: the voltage it accepts, its real power draw and the cables that fit.

  • 4-pin socket
  • 9 to 30 V DC
  • Peak 3 W at 12 V

We sell the cable, not the router. Only the power side is ours. The Teltonika TRB142 is made and sold by Teltonika, while the cables below are made and shipped by Smart Power Cable.

About the Teltonika TRB142

The TRB142 is the TRB gateway with an RS232 DB9 connector. There is no Ethernet port; it is made to connect one serial device, such as a meter, a scale or an older controller, to a remote server over LTE Cat 1.

It often lives next to legacy equipment that has a serial port and nothing else.

How much power the TRB142 draws

The numbers are small: 0.32 W at idle and 3 W at full load, measured by Teltonika at 12 V. That peak works out at about 249 mA, or 17% of our supply's rating. On a 24 V supply the peak is about 3.4 W.

Peak at 12 V: 3 W of the 18 W our 230 V supply delivers

Which cable should I pick?

  • Wall socket. A replacement for the original adapter, with 15 W of spare capacity.
  • Vehicle. Plugs into a vehicle socket. Fused, with an LED in the plug.
  • Cabinet, battery or solar. Permanent wiring in a cabinet or vehicle, 2 m long. Add a 2 A slow-blow fuse near the source.

Install tips

  • Low draw makes the TRB142 suited to battery sites. Wire it with the screw terminal cable and a small inline fuse, and it will run a long time on a modest battery.
  • On 24 V vehicles, add surge protection. Truck and bus systems can spike well above 30 V at engine start, and the Teltonika TRB142 is only rated to 30 V.
  • Keep the screw terminals tight and check them once a year in vehicles or cabinets with vibration.

Teltonika TRB142 power FAQ

?Can I run the Teltonika TRB142 on 12 V or 24 V?

Yes, both. The input range is 9 to 30 V DC, fed through the 4-pin power socket.

?Why buy a separate power cable for the Teltonika TRB142?

The adapter in the box only works with a wall socket. In a vehicle, a cabinet or on a battery, the car cable or the screw terminal cable is the better fit.

?How little power does the Teltonika TRB142 use?

Very little. Teltonika measured about 0.3 W at idle and about 3 W at its busiest on 12 V. That makes it a good fit for battery or solar powered sites using the screw terminal cable.

?What do the green and white wires do on the Teltonika TRB142?

The 4-pin socket on the Teltonika TRB142 carries one digital input and one digital output, and the screw terminal cable brings both out on the green and white wires. Check Teltonika's pinout drawing for which pin is which before wiring.

?Will the 230 V supply run the Teltonika TRB142 at full load?

Yes. Teltonika's full-load figure is 3 W at 12 V, which leaves 15 W unused.

?Does Smart Power Cable sell Teltonika routers?

Not the router, no. We are an independent maker of power cables. The Teltonika TRB142 is a Teltonika product sold through their own channels.
