Teltonika RUT986 power supply and cables

Three ways to power the Teltonika RUT986, a four-port 4G router: a 230 V wall supply, a 12/24 V car cable and a screw terminal cable. All fit its 4-pin socket.

  • 4-pin socket
  • 9 to 30 V DC
  • Peak 10.2 W at 12 V

We sell the cable, not the router. This page is about powering the Teltonika RUT986. We make the cables and the supply. The router itself comes from Teltonika and its resellers.

About the Teltonika RUT986

The RUT986 is the industrial all-rounder of the Telit-based RUT9 models. It adds RS232, RS485, GNSS and several I/Os to four Ethernet ports, dual SIM and eSIM, and supports protocols like Modbus, DNP3 and OPC UA. Teltonika pitches it for zero-touch deployment managed through RMS.

Expect to find it in utility substations, energy metering and remote industrial sites.

How much power the RUT986 draws

On 12 V, the Teltonika RUT986 draws about 853 mA at its busiest, or 10.2 W. Left idle it sits near 1.7 W. Our 230 V supply is rated 1.5 A, so the router uses roughly 57% of it at peak. At 24 V Teltonika lists a peak of 10.5 W.

Which cable should I pick?

  • Wall socket. For a desk, a shop or any spot with a wall socket. Uses about 57% of the supply at peak.
  • Vehicle. Plugs into a vehicle socket. Fused, with an LED in the plug.
  • Cabinet, battery or solar. Permanent wiring in a cabinet or vehicle, 2 m long. Add a 2 A slow-blow fuse near the source.

Install tips

  • Industrial cabinets often run on 24 V DC. That is fine for the RUT986, but keep the supply clean, because the router's limit is 30 V and some 24 V supplies overshoot at switch-on.
  • On 24 V vehicles, add surge protection. Truck and bus systems can spike well above 30 V at engine start, and the Teltonika RUT986 is only rated to 30 V.
  • Use a decent supply. Teltonika warns that cheap adapters can send voltage spikes when plugged in or unplugged, and those spikes can damage the router.

Teltonika RUT986 power FAQ

?What voltage does the Teltonika RUT986 need?

The Teltonika RUT986 accepts 9 to 30 V DC on its 4-pin socket. That covers 12 V and 24 V systems, but not 48 V.

?Why buy a separate power cable for the Teltonika RUT986?

The adapter in the box only works with a wall socket. In a vehicle, a cabinet or on a battery, the car cable or the screw terminal cable is the better fit.

?Which cable is best for a Teltonika RUT986 in a control cabinet?

The screw terminal cable. It connects to the cabinet's 12 or 24 V DC rail and gives you the input and output on the power socket as well.

?What do the green and white wires do on the Teltonika RUT986?

Green is the digital input on pin 3 and white is the digital output on pin 4. You set up both in the RutOS web interface.

?Will the 230 V supply run the Teltonika RUT986 at full load?

Yes. Teltonika's full-load figure is 10.2 W at 12 V, which leaves 7.8 W unused.

?Do you sell the Teltonika RUT986 itself?

No. We only make the power cables and the supply. The Teltonika RUT986 is sold by Teltonika's distributors.
