Teltonika RUT956 power supply and cables

The Teltonika RUT956 is a four-port 4G router with a 4-pin power socket. Here is what fits it, what it draws, and which cable suits your install.

  • 4-pin socket
  • 9 to 30 V DC
  • Peak 10.3 W at 12 V

We sell the cable, not the router. Good to know: we sell the power cable, not the Teltonika RUT956. If you need the router, buy it from a Teltonika distributor and pick the lead here.

About the Teltonika RUT956

The RUT956 is the current full-featured 4G model in the RUT9 line. It has four Ethernet ports, dual SIM, GNSS, RS232 and RS485, a USB port, microSD and an I/O block, all in the 109.5 x 50 x 100 mm housing.

It is the one people choose when a site needs location data, serial devices and a couple of alarms on the same router.

How much power the RUT956 draws

Teltonika's power table puts the Teltonika RUT956 at 1.5 W idle and 10.3 W flat out at 12 V. In current that is about 855 mA, against the 1500 mA our supply can give. Teltonika's 24 V figure is 10.6 W at peak.

Peak at 12 V: 10.3 W of the 18 W our 230 V supply delivers

Which cable should I pick?

  • Wall socket. 12 V from a wall socket. The RUT956 peaks at 10.3 W, well within the 18 W rating.
  • Vehicle. Plugs into a vehicle socket. Fused, with an LED in the plug.
  • Cabinet, battery or solar. Permanent wiring in a cabinet or vehicle, 2 m long. Add a 2 A slow-blow fuse near the source.

Install tips

  • If you power a USB modem or drive from the RUT956, count its draw on top of the router's own 10 W or so. Small sticks are fine, spinning disks are not.
  • On 24 V vehicles, add surge protection. Truck and bus systems can spike well above 30 V at engine start, and the Teltonika RUT956 is only rated to 30 V.
  • Keep the screw terminals tight and check them once a year in vehicles or cabinets with vibration.

Teltonika RUT956 power FAQ

?Which input voltage does the Teltonika RUT956 accept?

Anything from 9 to 30 V DC works, so a 12 V battery, a 24 V truck system or our 12 V supply are all fine. Stay below 30 V, including spikes.

?Why buy a separate power cable for the Teltonika RUT956?

The adapter in the box only works with a wall socket. In a vehicle, a cabinet or on a battery, the car cable or the screw terminal cable is the better fit.

?Can a USB device push the Teltonika RUT956 past 18 W?

Unlikely. Teltonika measured the RUT956 at about 10.3 W at 12 V with everything running, so there are roughly 7 W left on our 18 W supply. A large USB hard drive is the kind of thing that could eat into that.

?What do the green and white wires do on the Teltonika RUT956?

Green is the digital input on pin 3 and white is the digital output on pin 4. You set up both in the RutOS web interface.

?Can I buy the Teltonika RUT956 from you?

No, the router is not included. You get the cable or supply you order, and the Teltonika RUT956 itself comes from a Teltonika reseller.
