We developed this cable ourselves and tested it for the lowest possible loss, so as much as possible of the signal from the outdoor antenna reaches the router. It is made for 4G and 5G routers and modems on boats and sailboats, in motorhomes and caravans, and at cabins and summer houses where the antenna has to sit outside.
The 10 metre length suits medium runs, such as an antenna on the wheelhouse, rail or arch of a boat, or on the gable of a house with the router in another room.
It has SMA male at one end and SMA female at the other. Use it between the router and the antenna, or to extend an antenna cable that is too short. The joints between cable and connectors are sealed with heat shrink, and the white jacket is easy to run neatly along a hull, mast or wall.
Getting the most out of the antenna
- Measure the route the cable will actually take, including bends and lead-throughs, and choose the shortest length that reaches. Every extra metre adds a little loss, even when it is coiled up.
- Use one cable per antenna port. Many 4G and 5G routers have two mobile antenna ports, and some have four. Connect them all to get the full benefit of MIMO.
- Avoid sharp bends, and do not pinch the cable in hatches, windows or door frames.
- Seal the outdoor connection against water, for example with self-amalgamating tape, and let the cable hang in a drip loop before it enters the hull or wall.
- Use as few adapters and joints as you can. Every connection adds some loss.
